Case:
My client has a couple of million customers. Data about the customers are stored in a huge database. Several times a year customers receive letters from my client. The content in these letters consists partly of database stored standard texts and parly of cusomer specific data from de database. Letters are produced in batches.

Client demands:
100% generation of reports from Designer. Only in very special cases is manual editing in Report Builder accepted.

If one customer is about to receive more than one letter within a short period of time (if more than one report batch produces letters to the same customer within the same batch window) the letters have to be printed sorted by customer, even if letters were produced in batch, so costs for stamps and envelopes is reduced.

Some eltters contain two or more pages with different layouts and different contents. Depending on the value of a specific parameter the prints of these reports should either include all pages or just a choise of pages.

Problem 1:
Is there a way to sort prints of report batches by customer as described above?

Problem 2:
Is there a way to solve the parameter driven choise of which pages to be printed in Designer?

Development environment:
Oracle 8i Enterprise Edition 8.1.6, Oracle Designer 6.0.3, Oracle Report Builder 6.0.5

Hoping for help.

Contact a company called Pitney Bowes and discuss your requirements with them. They have a product called StreamWeaver, and other products, that may allow you to address some of the problems that you described. StreamWeaver basically allows you to make alterations to print streams to meet your needs. It is not cheap. But, the potential exists for hugh returns on investment, especially when you are talking large mailing volumes.
