Which application do you use to open an oracle shell? I am new to oracle and doesnt really know how to do that. For example in the following thread Barbara uses some kind of shell and types in the SQL. I have Toad and Embarcadero installed, but dont see any shell option there.

Thanks

I beleive, it is just sql*plus ( the old, default, native and cool command line tool that is distributed along with oracle).

SQL*Plus.

If you're using Windows, look for something called sqlplus.exe or sqlplusw.exe.

I dont have sqlplus.exe or sqlplusw.exe installed. I just have the Oracle .NET provider installed on my system. The Oracle database is on another server. I guess I have to download the tool from somewhere.

the product titled.
Oracle9i Database Release 2 Enterprise/Standard/Personal/Client Edition for Windows XP 2003/Windows Server 2003 (64-bit)

should help ( are you in 64 bit env?. else look for 32 bit)
Oracle9i Database Release 2 Enterprise/Standard/Personal/Client Edition for Windows Server 2003 (32-bit)

DOnt worry about versions.
any version of 9i /10g client would help.
( except in a very few cases, like export and import of database, where you need to do something more becuause of version difference. No big deal) sqlplus tool remains almost the same!.
download the software ( needs a free membership), install the client ( ONLY THE CLIENT), edit your tnsnames.ora to identify and connect to the databases in server.

Thanks buddy.

I am downloading right now:

Oracle9i Database Release 2 Client for Microsoft Windows 98/2000/NT/XP for 32 Bit.

I downloaded sqlplus for Oracle10, but when I run it I got:

The procedure entry point Ifipthad could not be located in the dynamic link library OCI.dll

It seems that this version doesnt work for me.

seems the .net provider previously installed is not happy.
I am not sure.

Did you install the oracle in a new ORACLE_HOME ( install in seperate directory).
did you try 9i?

Hey,

I got sqlplus installed, however when trying to login, I always get:

TNS-12560 TNS:protocol adapter error

Where can I set the protocol specification. I did that with the netmanager and also connected successfuly via that. However when running sqlplus.exe it doesnt work.

edit sqlnet.ora and comment all entries.
edit tnsnames.ora and add entries to talk to your databases.
search this forum or google for examples.
