Hot backup is a broad term.
What particular method is employed?
with RMAN you can validate http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96566/rcmrecov.htm#1008110
But, in reality the only way to check the backup is to test restore it. Frequently ( Randomly, once a month) i do all kinds of simulated failures and test restore by duplicating the target database in a seperate test environment.
