When I have installed oracle 8i it was working alright. but when i rebooted the system and to logged in SQL+ it is giving error ORA-01034: ORACLE not available .

OS- XP prof

Can anybody tell me how to resolve this problem?

It seems that database isn't up (yet?). It takes some time for database to become available, so either wait a little bit longer, or - if it still won't work - start it up by yourself. This might do it:

OS> sqlplus /nolog
SQL> connect sys/its_password@database
SQL> startup

Topic split. It had nothing to do with the installation of Oracle XE. On topic: Oracle8i is history. Download either 9iR2 or 10g because 8i is not certified for XP. Check whether your Oracle services are running. But I repeat: go for a more recent Oracle version.

You can run Oracle by running the following batch file in the attachement.
