Having a bit of a surreal IT experience at the moment. We're launching a new project and have only 3 team members on board (Architect, BA, PM). The average age is 47! And I'm the "baby".

The last time I was the youngest person on a project team was about 14 years ago.

I know the bubble will burst when we get into design phase. A hoarde of whipper-snappers with hair over their eyes will prance in calling each other 'Dude' and using network-gaming metaphors that I don't understand and knock the average back down into the 20's.

Bah humbug.

So, doing some math, you will either have to get three people at age 11 just to get the "average" back down into the 20's like you say, or any of the following:

2 people at age 4,
3 people at age 11,
4 people at age 17,
5 people at age 19,
6 people at age 20,

etc.

Or, following this pattern, you'll need a BIG group of people at a valid age just to get your average age down in the 20's. Sounds like a quite inefficient use of company money. but, it also sounds like your typical outsource mentality.

[edit - I meant 2 people at age 4 - fixed]

"Average age of 47"!! Out of our 7 people only one can put their age on a Lotto ticket!!

Laughing Excellent.

I'm a bit young to join David's team; still good for lotto numbers for another 7 years. The rest of the team.... well....

I don't know about outsource mentality. My first job was in-house; we had about 40 programmers and 1 was over 30 (32 I think).

I agree. I too have the feeling that the average age of people that I work with in projects seems to keep up with my own age.
