Hi!
I'm working on deploying physical standby DB with automatic failover. I don't have any previous oracle DBA experience but I've been reading countless white papers, howtos etc and I start to get the idea.
However, there are some questions that I couldn't find answers to.
1) As I understand, automatic failover from primary to standby requires a 3rd server with DGMGRL 'observer' that will watch the primary and promote the standby DB to primary in case of failure.
So my question is - is it possible to do this without a 3rd server - using something like heartbeat.

If you don't want to use 3rd server then when you will configure OBSERVER
either on PRIMARY or STANDBY and which is not a good approach to overcome this problem.

Here's the data guard guide with data broker and observer.
